تولا یا خرترودیس، شخصیت سرسخت بلندترین رمان اونامونو، بیانگر آغاز زمزمه گذر از سنت به مدرنیته اسپانیا و طرح مسائل فمینیستی از سویی و در اصل بیانگر شخصیت پارادوکسیکال نویسنده‌ای با زیربنای تفکر اگزیستانسیالیست که هم در نسل ادبی خویش سرآمد بوده است و هم در هم‌نسلان خویش و نویسندگان آتی تاثیرگذار. نویسنده‌ای که از سوی بزرگانی چون بورخس ستوده شد.
