این کتاب درباره ی سربازان آمریکایی در جریان جنگ جهانی دوم است. نام این کتاب در ادبیات انگلیسی راه یافته است و قرین معنای بیهوده و بی‌سرانجام شده است. هلر به عنوان یکی از بهترین طنز پردازان بعد از جنگ جهانی دوم شناخته می‌شود. این کتاب در سال 1953 نوشته شده و برای اولین بار در 1961 منتشر شده است.
